WHAT IS EXETER 2044?

The Town of Exeter wants you—and your family, friends, and neighbors—to help plan for our future as we update our comprehensive plan for the next 20 years. The State of Rhode Island requires all municipalities to have a 20-year comprehensive plan to guide future growth and development. Exeter’s last plan, adopted in 2004, is now out of date and State approval has expired. We need a new one to meet the challenges of the future—so we can preserve what we love about our town and change what needs to be better. The State requires the plan to address natural and historic resources and the environment; housing; economic development; town facilities; transportation; climate change; and future land use. Planning in all those areas gives us a framework for managing development and quality of life based on our vision and goals. The planning process gives everyone a chance to understand and consider a range of opportunities, constraints, and options for Exeter's future in a systematic way. It will help Exeter promote positive changes and deflect negative ones—rather than simply reacting after change occurs. View the State requirements.

MEET THE PLANNING TEAM

The Town Council, in consultation with the Planning Board, has appointed a Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) for the Exeter 2044 Comprehensive Plan. The CPAC comprises a broadly representative group of community residents and leaders, plus the members of the Planning Board. The CPAC works to encourage participation in the planning process by stakeholders; provides guidance to the consultant team; helps shape the plan to reflect the aspirations and needs of residents; and reviews and comments on the planning process and documents. All CPAC meetings will be open to the public and include a public comment period at the end. Check the Schedule & Events tab to see when future meetings will take place.
